Install DUKE in DaVinci Resolve
It takes about a minute. The same guide is inside every download.
1. Quit DaVinci Resolve
Close Resolve completely before you copy the file.
2. Copy the .drfx file
Unzip your download. Copy the .drfx file (for example DUKE-Transitions.drfx) into the Templates folder for your system.
Mac
/Users/YOUR-NAME/Library/Application Support/Blackmagic Design/DaVinci Resolve/Fusion/TemplatesThe Library folder is hidden on a Mac. In Finder choose Go, then Go to Folder, paste the path above (with your own user name), and press Return.
Windows
C:\Users\YOUR-NAME\AppData\Roaming\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve\Support\Fusion\TemplatesOr paste %APPDATA%\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve\Support\Fusion\Templates into the File Explorer address bar.
Shortcut that may work on newer versions: with Resolve open, double-click the .drfx file and click Install, then restart Resolve. If the shortcut does nothing, use the steps above.
3. Open DaVinci Resolve
Find your transitions
Go to the Edit page. Open Effects (top left), then Toolbox, then Video Transitions. Scroll to the DUKE Transitions group, or type DUKE in the Effects search box.
Use them
- Drag a transition onto a cut between two clips.
- Make it slower or faster by dragging the edge of the transition on the timeline. About one second is a good start. Brush, Water and Pixel look best at 1.5 to 2 seconds.
- Click the transition and open the Inspector to adjust its controls.
New: the Curve tab
Every DUKE transition has two tabs in the Inspector. Controls has the usual sliders. Curve lets you shape the motion yourself.
- Original DUKE (the default): the transition exactly as designed.
- Ease Preset: pick an Ease In and Ease Out, for example Expo for a fast snap, Back for overshoot, Bounce or Elastic.
- Custom Curve: drag the points on the graph to shape the motion. The graph is always visible, and the reset arrow next to it puts it back.
Updating to a new version
- Quit DaVinci Resolve.
- Download the newest version: paid packs from your order page (the link from your purchase), free packs from this site.
- Copy the new .drfx file into the same Templates folder and choose Replace. Names stay the same, so nothing shows up twice.
- Open DaVinci Resolve.
Transitions already on your timelines keep the version they had. Drag a transition on again to get the new one. Printable version: DUKE Update Guide (PDF).
DUKE Drop-Ins (logo and text FX)
Drop-Ins install the same way. Copy DUKE-Drop-Ins.drfx (or DUKE-Drop-Ins-Free.drfx from the free pack) into the same Templates folder above, then restart Resolve.
Find them on the Edit page under Effects, Toolbox, Effects, then the DUKE Drop-Ins group, or type DUKE Drop in the Effects search box. Drop one onto a logo, PNG, title or clip that sits on a track above your video.
- Size your logo with the effect's Size slider in the Inspector, not with Inspector Zoom. Keep Zoom at 100%.
- In Duration and Out Duration set the entrance and exit. Out Duration 0 keeps it on screen.
- If you install the full pack, delete DUKE-Drop-Ins-Free.drfx so the 5 free ones do not show up twice.
Tips
- Each clip needs a little extra footage past the cut (handles), or the transition will not fit.
- If playback stutters, turn on Playback, Render Cache, Smart. Final exports are always full quality.
Uninstall
Quit Resolve, delete the .drfx file from the Templates folder above, and open Resolve.
